Question: what are you an expert in?
If you answered “nothing,” then answer this question:
What would you LIKE to be an expert in?
And don’t tell me “nothing.” Or anything. Or everything.
You…yes, YOU!…can be an expert in anything you want to be.
And you don’t need to go to college or move to another city or country.
I’m being very serious here.
The secret to becoming the expert in anything is…
READ THE TOP 500 BOOKS ON WHATEVER THE TOPIC YOU WANT TO BE AN EXPERT IN.
If you do that, you will know MORE than a college graduate in that field.
Is reading ANY 500 books easy? No.
How many books have you read so far this year? I’ve read 19 (…and counting!).
How many books did you read last year? Me? 57.
Since 2007, I have read over302 books. How many have you read?
THE BIG QUESTION: is reading the top 500 books on your topic easy? NO!
Is it worth it? Oh yeah

Mark,
I really like this article, I get asked a lot by my clients “How do I become an expert?” and I like and have used your answer however I usually get the no time excuse. To help them get started I suggest, Google the top blogs in your area of desired expertise and start with those. If they suggest reading a book, write it down. When you have read enough blogs you should have at least a short list of books to get you started. Thoughts?

Hi, Patty. Yes, I too hate the “I’ve got no time” excuse. I try to remember to ask the people who say this “do you have time to watch your favorite show or sports team?” They often respond yes. Well, if you have time to watch shows that make others rich…don’t you think you can carve out the time to make you rich by becoming an expert? Thanks for commenting!
