Much has been written about goals. You already (or should) know that goals should be SMART:
S – specific
M – measureable
A – achievable
R – realistic
T – time-bound (have a deadline)
But today’s blog post is all about…
The when of goals
Traditionally, people come up with their goals for the new year…around New Year’s Day. Sometimes before and sometimes a little after. At least they have some goals.
The sad thing is when people think that if they don’t have any goals by the first of the new year they have to wait until the following near year. This is not true…and yet, it does happen.
Don’t wait for a certain time of year or for some event to happen in your life before you create some goals for yourself. The best time to create some goals for yourself and your journey to success is NOW. That’s right, if you have no goals, you need to write some out AS SOON AS YOU FINISH READING THIS POST. I don’t care who you are, how old you are, where you live…
What happens when you don’t have goals
When a missile is fired at a target, it is constantly recalculating where the target is, where it (the missile) is and what changes it needs to make in order to stay on target. Without goals, you are basically wandering through life with no target. The odds of you succeeding (which you won’t be able to tell if you are on target because you have nothing to measure it against) are very low.
Let me remind you: you were made on purpose for a purpose. Put another way…you are not a mistake.
Here are some questions to consider as you take time to write out some goals for yourself:
- what are you supposed to be doing? If you’re not sure, what are you passionate about?
- where are you now?
- what do you need to do to get where you need/want to be? Don’t worry about the HOW here…just the WHAT.
Spending some time pondering these questions will help you craft some goals that help you make the course corrections you need to make in order for you to achieve success.
Don’t wait one more day
Make a commitment to yourself that you will not make any more excuses. Schedule some time today to grab a pad and pen or your electronic device and start creating some goals for yourself. For your journey to success.
Remember there are no right or wrong answers. These are your goals. This is about your journey to success.
How often do you re-evaluate your goals and do you make course corrections?
